A standing plate of rose colored druzy agate, the whole front face crusted edge to edge in tiny sparkling crystals.

The color is a soft dusty rose that deepens to plum where the crust dips, and pale veins run across it like cracks in dry ground. Turn it and the back is the rock it grew in, gray green host stone with a dark banded rind, so you can see exactly where the pocket opened. It stands on its own cut base.

This one came out of Uruguay, from the supplier we buy our Uruguayan geodes from. The rose color comes from fine hematite in the quartz. You will see plates like this sold as pink amethyst, which is a trade name rather than a mineral name, and this one is a druzy agate.

Now for the fun part. Crystal lore has always given agate the steady job, the one you hand to somebody who is running hot, said to slow a racing week down to something a person can actually stand in. Rose tones get the opposite assignment, the softening, the heart, the permission to be gentle with yourself on a Tuesday. This plate is both at once, which is a lovely thing to be.

Then there is the druzy, and this is where it gets good. A single crystal point is said to hold one clear note. A druzy is thousands of tiny points across one face, so lore reads it as a chorus rather than a soloist, the same intention sung back from every direction at once. People keep druzy near where they work for exactly that, a whole crowd of small bright yeses instead of one.

The hematite that makes the rose is a grounding stone in its own right, so the color and the calm come from the same place, which is a satisfying thing to know about a rock. And it grew inside a Uruguayan lava bubble, in the dark, taking its time, which is the kind of origin story crystal people never get tired of.
