A pyrite sphere from Peru, polished until the metal shines, with clusters of small brassy crystals left rough across the surface so it catches light from every angle.
Pyrite is a metal, and this is the piece that teaches people that. Half the surface takes a mirror polish, warm gold and almost liquid looking. The other half is a field of tiny cubic crystals packed tight, dark in the hollows and bright on the points, so the whole ball flickers as you turn it.
The weight is the part nobody expects. It is 2.538 inches across and weighs 1 pound 1.5 ounces, which is about two and a half times what a quartz ball the same size would weigh. Hand it to someone without warning and watch their arm drop.
