Larimar is the blue of shallow Caribbean water, and it comes from exactly one place on earth, a single mountainside in the Dominican Republic. This is a big polished slab of it, four and a half inches across, in soft sky and sea blue with the feathery white patterns larimar is known for, like light moving on the bottom of a pool. Threading through the blue are veins of gray and tan, the rock the larimar grew in, which frame the color and make every square inch different.
The face is polished to a soft glow and the edges are left natural, so it reads as a slice of the stone rather than a shaped object. It is light in the hand at six ounces and it comes on a metal pin stand with a clear acrylic base that holds it upright to the light, where the blue does its best work.
Larimar is pectolite, an ordinary mineral almost everywhere else, that turned blue only here, and only in this one volcanic deposit, which is why it is considered rare and why it has become the stone of the island. It is read as a calming, cooling stone, the one for soothing a hot temper and a racing mind, and for saying the thing you have been holding back, gently. People who love the sea tend to love larimar on sight. Set it by a window, on a bathroom shelf, or on a desk where a cool color helps you think.
