A big, generous slab of banded calcite, close to ten inches across, with wave after wave of banding running across the face in cream, soft sage green, rust, and deep brown. The bands zigzag and double back on themselves, with little round eyes tucked into the folds and one wide open field of pale stone in the corner that gives the eye a place to rest. The face is cut flat and left with a soft matte finish, so the color reads gently rather than glossy, and the natural edge of the slab is kept all the way around.
This kind of banded calcite is usually sold as Mexican onyx. It is not a true onyx (that is a chalcedony), it is calcite that grew in layers, which is what gives it those flowing bands and its soft, almost waxy glow in the light.
It comes with a simple wooden X stand, stained dark, that holds the slab upright at a slight lean. Set it on a console, a mantel, or a bookshelf and it reads like a piece of art.
