A wide plate of honey gold calcite blades, layered and fanned over each other like the petals of a big open flower, with rusty orange staining caught along the edges of the blades. The color runs from pale cream at the tips to deep amber where the blades stack up, and the surface has a soft waxy sheen that comes alive in window light. Flip it over and the back is a rough plate of dark brown matrix, the rock it grew on.
At about 6.5 inches across it is a real presence on a shelf. Put it on a mantel or a console where the light comes in from the side, so the blades throw little shadows on each other, or set it on a windowsill and let the afternoon sun rake across the blades. She is warm and generous, the kind of piece that makes a whole shelf feel lived in.
