An elephant carved from serpentine, trunk raised, standing on his own four feet with no stand needed.
The stone is pale mint green clouded with cream, and caramel colored veining drifts across his back and down his legs. Serpentine takes its name from the way that mottled surface reads like snakeskin, and no two carvings come out the same because the carver works with whatever the pattern is doing. On this one it runs diagonally across the body, which is why he looks like he is moving even standing still.
Polished all over, smooth and faintly waxy in the hand, which is how serpentine finishes. He is heavier than he looks, just over a pound, so he holds down a stack of paper or simply sits somewhere and gets picked up by everyone who visits.
A note on the name. Serpentine is very often sold as new jade, and it is not jade at all. True jade is nephrite or jadeite. That is not a downgrade, it is simply what it is, and the soft green and the lovely polish are exactly why serpentine has been carved for centuries.
An elephant with his trunk up is the lucky one. The raised trunk is read as good fortune being scooped up and thrown over the household rather than poured away, and elephants generally carry the ideas of strength, long memory and quiet protection, the big steady presence that looks after everyone smaller than it. People put them by a door, on a desk, or somewhere a family walks past every day.
Crystal lore holds serpentine as the stone that clears the way. It is spoken of in terms of shedding what you have outgrown, the snake image again, and of a path opening up in front of you. It is tied to the heart, to steadiness, and to feeling settled in your own ground, so it suits a piece meant to stand somewhere and quietly look after the place.
This is the exact elephant in the photographs. There is only one of him.
