A pair of butterfly wings cut from blue apatite and set onto a slim metal stand with a shaped body and curled antennae.
Blue apatite is the deep denim one, and this pair runs dark through the body of each wing and lifts to a brighter blue along the upper edge. Pale veining crosses both wings in a fine net. The outside edge steps down in scallops and points, the face is cut with long fanned lines that read as feathering, and the surface is finished smooth.
The wings lift off the stand, so it arrives as three pieces and goes back together in about a second.
Put it where light crosses the wings rather than hitting them flat on. Raking light pulls the pale veining forward and separates the bright upper edge from the darker blue underneath. Straight front light turns it into one navy shape and throws all of that away. A windowsill, the end of a bookshelf, a desk, anywhere the light angle moves through the day.
Blue apatite is the one people reach for when they have been putting something off. The old reading is appetite in the honest sense, the return of wanting to do the thing, and it sits with the throat and with plain speech the way most deep blues do.
