A dark agate nodule cut open and polished, with almost the whole front given over to the cave. The druzy inside is a deep blue gray that reads nearly black until the light reaches it, and then the entire face breaks into fine points at once. A band of pale cream crust runs along the lower edge of the opening where the nodule was still rough, and the shell around it is polished to a near black gloss with one soft gray band curving over the top. The bottom is cut flat. The agate is from Uruguay.

This one is all about the moment the light finds it. Face on in a dim corner it reads as a dark rounded stone, and then a lamp moves or you move and the whole cave lights up grainy and silver. Put it where that can happen, a shelf you walk past, a side table near a lamp, somewhere the light changes through the day rather than a spot that is evenly lit all the time.
Agate is the steady one. It is the stone people keep for the long middle of things, the stretch that is not a crisis and not a triumph, when what is needed is to simply keep going at the same pace. Banded agate in particular has long been read as a record of patience, each layer laid down in its own time and none of them hurried, and it is kept for grounding, for steadiness of temper, and for the slow building of confidence that cannot be rushed into place. A piece as dark as this one gets read a little differently again, as a holding stone rather than a lifting one, the sort kept close through a stretch that has to be waited out. Many set one where the day ends rather than where it starts.
